THREE ATTRIBUTES I WISH I HAD LEARNT FROM MY FATHER - Part 1

My (late) father was a doctor too. One of his amazing habits was that whenever anyone, a distant relative, a far flung acquaintance, a neighbour, called him at any time of the night for help with any health crisis, he would immediately get out of bed to help them, even if it meant that he would not get any sleep for the rest of the night and may have to go to work the next day with only a couple of hours of sleep.

I observed this most closely after he had retired from the Army and was working as a hospital administrator. It would never occur to him to charge anyone any fee as he stood with people whole night to make sure they received the required care.

Sometimes the people asking for help would be people who had bad-mouthed him on previous occasion, or in occasional cases had caused him significant financial loss. We would sometimes get upset why he put his own health at risk for such people, considering he was nearly 60 by then, but these things never deterred my father. He simply replied that you just helped people to the best of your ability without any fear or favour, and expect the return only from God.

My only regret is I wish I could be more like him in this regard.
