ISLAM AND THE WEST - 22

The second category of Sunnah are those practices that were unique to the Holy Prophet , for example, fasting for several days at a time without doing Iftar in between (صومِ وصال). Other Muslims are not allowed to follow these Sunnah.

The third category are those practices which the Holy Prophet  did not adopt as a practice of Shariah, but more as a matter of habit or chance. These are called Sunan-e-Aadiyah (سننِ عادیہ) or Sunan-e-Zawaid (سننِ زوائد). It is not obligatory upon Muslims to follow these Sunnah but since the verse of the Qur’an quoted above about the merits of following the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet  does not specify which Sunnah to follow, many Muslims have always made great efforts to follow as many Sunnah of the Holy Prophet  as possible.
