ISLAM AND THE WEST - 121

“Allah Ta’ala does not tell us not to have love of Dunya (material world). He tells us not to have so much love of this material world that it supersedes our love for Allah Ta’ala and the Holy Prophet , the sign of which is that a person starts neglecting Allah Ta’ala’s commandments when they come into conflict with his love for Dunya. He does not tell us not to have natural attraction towards material world. He tells us not to have conscious/voluntary love for material world, and the standard to judge that is that a person’s love for material world does not stop him from obeying Allah Ta’ala’s commands and from willingness to go through struggles in Allah Ta’ala’s way. If a person is sure that this is true for him, then the natural love for his wealth, his spouse or children is not harmful at all.” (MAAT-RE)
