ISLAM AND THE WEST - 14

On the other hand, there are new situations which did not exist in the days of Prophet Muhammad . For example, the treatments of blood transfusion or organ transplantation did not exist in those days. Therefore, there is no existing ruling in Qur’an and Hadith whether these are permissible or not. It is questions like these where it is permissible to use Ijma’ (consensus) and Qiyas/Ijtihad  (analogical reasoning) to find their answers though, as mentioned above, it can only be done by scholars who are formally trained in the knowledge of Islamic Jurisprudence to a very high level.
