ISLAM AND THE WEST - 15

THE FIVE FACETS OF ISLAM

Maulana Ashraf Ali of Thana Bhawan (may Allah bless him) used to say that there are five facets of Islam. These are;

1. AQA’ID (BELIEFS)
2. IBADAT (ACTS OF WORSHIP)
3. MA’AMLAT (FINACIAL TRANSACTIONS)
4. MA’ASHRAT (WAYS OF INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE)
5. AKHLAQ / TAZKIYAH (PURIFICATION OF MIND)

Hazrat Thanvi further used to say that these days many Muslims believe, or at least act as if they believe, that only Aqa'id and Ibadaat are part of Deen (religion). People who are exceptionally religious also take care that their financial transactions follow the rules of Shariah. There are a few who go through Tazkiyah (purification of mind), but even among those chosen few many act as if Ma'ashrat (rules of how we relate to other people) is not part of Islam. Each of these facets will be described in detail in the following sections.
