ISLAM AND THE WEST - 5

Sometimes people ask the question, “As the Qur’an is nearly 1500 years old, surely the rulings about for example alcohol and pork and other matters can be changed now, considering how much societal attitudes have changed about many matters since then?” To understand the answer to this question, one has to understand the four source of commandments in Shariah which are listed below in descending order of authority.

  1. QUR’AN
  2. HADITH
  3. IJMA’ (CONSENSUS)
  4. QIYAS (ANALOGY)
