ISLAM AND THE WEST - 6

 THE NOBLE QUR’AN

Muslims believe that the Noble Qur’an was revealed by God to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over a period of 23 years, and that it is God’s words. The Arabs at the time prided themselves on their memories. Theirs was not a writing culture. That is why even though Prophet Muhammad  had told his companions the exact sequence of the different verses, and there were numerous companions including the Prophet himself who had memorized the Qur’an, it was not fully written down as a book during his lifetime.

During the reign of the first rightly guided Caliph Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) when about seventy Huffaaz(people who memorise the whole Qur’an) died in a single  battle, he realized the importance and started the process of conserving the Noble Qur’an in a written form.
