ISLAM AND THE WEST - 7

 PRESERVATION OF THE NOBLE QUR’AN

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said;

“This Qur’an has been revealed covering seven versions (Huruf). So from out of these, recite in a way that is easy on you.”

 According to scholars, the variations found in different readings of the Holy Qur’an are of seven types, for example, differences in nouns and verbs, etc. Until such time that Muslims knew that the Holy Qur’an had been revealed incorporating seven Huruf (versions), no harm was done by the difference. However, when Islam spread far and beyond the borders of Arabia, some people started insisting that their and their teacher’s version was correct and every other version was wrong.

When this danger was brought to the attention of the third guided Caliph Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), he solicited the help of notable Muslim scholars of the time and ordered for a set of master copies to be prepared with the following characteristics;

1.     Surahs to be placed in their proper sequence in a single copy.

2.     The verses of the Noble Qur’an were written in a way so that all readings backed by uninterrupted succession could be incorporated within their script.
