ISLAM AND THE WEST - 9

HADITH/SUNNAH

Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble Qur’an;

“He does not speak out of (his own) desire. It is but revelation revealed (to him).   (53:3-4)

In Islamic terminology the word ‘Hadith’ (literal meaning talk or discourse) refers to the words of Prophet Muhammad . The related word ‘Sunnah’ refers to the traditions and practices of Prophet Muhammad

Qur’an is like a constitution which lays down principles. Hadith teaches us how these principles should be applied in real life. For example, the command to pray Salah appears more than 60 times in Qur’an but it is not mentioned anywhere how to pray it, or specifically at what times to pray it. That has all been demonstrated through the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet .
