SHOULD REPORTING CHILD ABUSE BE MANDATORY IN NZ? - 2

I ask every such patient whether their parents knew, and if they knew, whether they did anything about it. It is shocking how many times patients have told me that they told their parent(s)/families but they didn’t do anything because; they didn’t believe them, were scared of the abuser, didn’t want to upset the abuser because they were getting some benefit from the abuser, or just did not want to rock the boat. One patient told me that when she went to the Police, her whole extended family boycotted her because ‘she’ had brought shame to the family. Ironically this same patient’s uncle rang us to express his anger why we hadn’t ‘fixed’ his niece in 15 days. I so felt like asking him where he was when she was being abused for the last 15 years.
