SHOULD REPORTING CHILD ABUSE BE MANDATORY IN NZ? - 5

There is also an argument against mandatory reporting of historical abuse. The argument is that some victims may be willing to seek help, but may not be willing or ready to go through the whole process of reporting it to Police, and then going through the nightmarish process of going through a court case in which they have to reveal every intimate detail of the abuse in front of many strangers, in addition to the defence lawyer putting their whole life under a microscope in order to find any dirt to discredit their testimony. If such victims knew that the health professionals would be bound to inform the authorities if they disclose their history of abuse, it might discourage some of them from seeking help in the first place.
