SHOULD REPORTING CHILD ABUSE BE MANDATORY IN NZ? - 6

Even though it is a really difficult and emotionally draining topic to read about and write on, there are two specific reasons I decided to write about it. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard a parent say something like this, “But he (or she as the case may be) was our neighbour, he was our family friend, I had to go to my job, the day care/child care was so expensive, I trusted him…” It is so important to remember that it is only the people who we trust, who have the opportunity to betray us. And we need to be extremely careful about who we trust with the most prized of our possessions, our children.

Once a friend told me that they had reached an arrangement with a taxi driver to pick and drop their 4-year old child from and to his kindy. I asked them how well they knew this person. They said they trusted him completely. I asked them that if I asked them to send me $5,000 in cash, would they be comfortable sending it by hand with that person? They said No. That is what we need to think about when we entrust someone with the sole care of our children. How much money would I have trusted this person with? And what is my child worth to me?
