SOME PARENTING ADVICE

 Following up on a conversation with some very good friends yesterday, for parents who want their children to adopt their values;

- Do not try to 'teach' your children your values, 'show' them your values by practicing them in your life.
- Do not tell them what their values should be, give them the tools to explore and learn, and develop their own values. It may be anxiety provoking for some parents to give their children freedom to choose their own values, but if you do it the right way you will be surprised how closely the values they eventually develop will resemble your own values.
- Relationship, relationship, relationship; the closer, more loving, more trusting, more open, your relationship is with your children, the more likely they are to grow up being you.

THE FIRST 5 YEARS

Some time ago a couple asked me for some advice about their 3 years old son's behaviour. In psychiatry, the dictum is that problem in children are often indicative of problems in their environment, and the younger the child, the more strongly this principle holds true. I, therefore, asked them in detail about their interaction with the child.  I found out that they both did full-time, quite high-powered, very demanding jobs. Before going to work, they left their only son at the daycare so early that he was still sleeping.
