ISLAM AND THE WEST - 101

“The primary cure of Badgumani (thinking ill of others), Tajassus (تجسّس) (trying to pry out other people’s secrets and weaknesses), and Gheebat (backbiting) is to adopt Tawazu (تواضع) (humility,), and removing Takabbur (grandiosity) from one’s inner-self. However, until that happens, the treatment of Gheebat is to think before speaking, fining oneself if it is committed inadvertently, and to focus one’s concentration towards Allah Ta’ala’s Zikr (remembrance) when a person gets any bad thoughts about other people.”

(In the terminology of Tasawwuf, Tawazu [تواضع]is the opposite of Takabbur and refers to believing that other people are better in the eyes of God than oneself.)
