 RIYA (ریا)

 

(Riya refers to the act of a person performing or publicising an Ibadah (act of worship) so that other people will praise him or he will obtain some other material gain, rather than performing Ibadah with the intention of pleasing Allah Ta’ala.)

 

“Before performing any act make a conscious intention of seeking the pleasure and approval of Allah Ta’ala. Do not consciously make an intention of pleasing people. If the thought that ‘people will praise me if they learn that I did this’ comes unintentionally, then do not worry about it and renew your conscious intention of seeking Allah Ta’ala’s approval only. If a person keeps practicing this for some time, then his internal drive for Riya (seeking people’s approval rather than Allah Ta’ala’s approval) becomes weaker. It is not necessary to completely eliminate negative attributes of inner-self, because it is often not possible. What is sufficient is that they become so weak that resisting them (in the sense that a person stops acting on what they compel us to do) becomes easier.”

  Alhamdulillah the second volume of the collection of translations of Mufti Taqi Usmani sahib's (DB) talks is now ready. Because of the Covid situation around the world I decide to just publish it as an e-book at this time. However, there is no restriction on anyone who wants to publish it in print and may want to distribute it. My first and foremost thanks and gratitude to Mufti Taqi Usmani sahib himself. As you know I am not a religious scholar. I had started translating his talks for my children, family, and friends who are unable to read Urdu.   Seek forgiveness from all your acquaintances   The next question is, who to seek forgiveness from? Who remembers how many people’s  Gheebat  we committed throughout our lives when we were completely neglectful about it? Should we draw up a list of all of them and ask all of them for forgiveness? Hadhrat Mufti Muhammad Shafi (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say that Paradise is not cheap. If you really want to go to Paradise then you will have to make some effort for it.
