THE THREE STAGES OF HASAD (حسد) (jealousy, envy)

“The first stage of Hasad is just a natural feeling (of unhappiness when something good happens to a person one is jealous of) which is beyond a person’s control (and therefore not a sin in itself).
The second is an action (for example badmouthing a person one is jealous of, making efforts for them to lose those good things he is jealous about). This is a sin.
The third is intentionally opposing that negative feeling towards the other person. This is mandated by Shariah. This means that if a person feels like badmouthing a person because of jealousy, then he should deliberately praise him in front of others. If he doesn’t feel like talking to him, then he should force himself to meet him, treat him with respect, initiate saying Salam to him, and do (Ihsan) good to him.”
