SHOULD REPORTING CHILD ABUSE BE MANDATORY IN NZ? - 3

The other shocking reply I almost always get is that hardly any of these victims have gone to the Police. When I ask why, a very common answer is, “there is no point because nothing is going to happen.” According to a NZ Ministry of Justice report from last year, of all the sexual violence cases (63 % against people aged 17 or younger) reported to the Police between 2014-2019, only 11 % resulted in a conviction, which means nearly 90 % didn’t. These figures would hardly encourage a victim to go the Police and go through the harrowing experience a sexual assault victim has to go through in pursuing such a case. If you combine the figure above with the much greater proportion of victims who do NOT go to the Police, it means majority of child abuse in NZ goes unpunished and there are almost no adverse consequences for committing such heinous crimes.
