SHOULD REPORTING CHILD ABUSE BE MANDATORY IN NZ? - 4

“In New Zealand, it is not mandatory to report partner and child abuse.”

This is a direct quote from the NZ Ministry of Health website. In a number of jurisdictions around the world reporting suspected child abuse, and in fact even historical child abuse if the abuser is still alive, is mandatory for health professionals. The rationale for such mandatory reporting is that these abusers often do not abuse just one child. There might be a number of other children who might be at risk. It is the same rationale behind the mandatory reporting of historical abuse if the abuser is still alive. The victim we are seeing may have become an adult now, but who knows how many other children might still be at risk being abused by this perpetrator.
